Hi,

http://www.w3.org/MarkUp/2004/xhtml-faq#target explains why the target
attribute was removed from XHTML 1.1.

But the latest draft of XHTML 1.1 adds the target attribute back:
http://www.w3.org/TR/2007/WD-xhtml11-20070216/xhtml11_dtd.html#a_xhtml11_driver

In particular, the DTD used by the validator allows for the target
attribute.

This suggests that the FAQ should be amended to better reflect that
situation.

Cheers,

Dom
