I am reluctant to be the source of any distraction from the task
at hand, so if this is not relevant just let me know...

As I just wrote to Joe, it seems to me it would be beneficial for
pages to be able to take advantage of synthesis and MIDI file playback
that is already standard on many target devices... 

If that is suggesting MIDI "works in the browser natively", then I
guess I am suggesting that... but only as an alternative to, not as
a replacement for, what Joe does in his notation playback example.

There are certainly no relevant codec/patent issues with MIDI...
unless I misunderstand your concerns.
