ibc, that's very reasonable. However, I've consulted a few people with significantly more experience than me, and they were under the impression that the JS-based approach is not viable in this case (though it took some time to shed light on the nature of the problem). They also thought that adding this attribute would be of general benefit, not just for Chrome, but in general.
