Starling is nice and very walkable. It used to be the Crowne Plaza until a
couple years ago. The old Ramada is now the Crowne Plaza which is also
walkable although a bit further as Nigel notes. Intercontinental, in
addition to being pricey is neither near the EBU nor near downtown -it
services the UN and ITU facilities. But all these (and EBU) are in an
industrial area of town and not very interesting relative to other areas of
town. The area that Glenn notes at Place de Cornavin is near the train
station and has a number of affordable hotels. They are generally one-off
or small chains so you have look harder. A bit west of there is "old town"
which is also a nice area with reasonable hotels.

This area of Geneva is not walkable to the EBU and taxies are expensive. But
the #10 bus runs frequently from the large bus/tram station at Place de
Cornavin to near the EBU and to the airport. City bus/rail tickets have been
free for the asking from your hotel front desk for a couple of years now
(they don't regularly check for tickets on any bus but they make impressive
random police-action like seizures/audits and fine people real money if they
don't have a ticket). Get the "tpg" phone app which is extremely useful.

I haven't spent enough time in Geneva to be able to recommend any hotels.
I've booked in to the Crowne Plaza on Avenue Louis Casai, which is just near
the airport, but sadly at the 'wrong end' to make it an easy walk (I'll
probably try it anyway though!). I'd say it is walkable from the Starling
Hotel, but the rate seems very high there.

I'll put in my two cents worth... The EBU is fairly close to the airport,
though not walking distance, and there are a number of hotels close by the
airport. The Intercontinental is about half way between the EBU and Gare de
Cornavin, but is pricey (at $460/night, expedia pricing).

I tend to stay at the hotels around Place Cornavin. For this trip, I booked
at Hotel Suisse for $215/night (expedia pricing).
