Summary: [XQ1.1] Definition of item and XDM instance does not
                    include function items
Product: XPath / XQuery / XSLT
           Version: Member-only Editors Drafts
          Platform: PC
        OS/Version: Windows NT
            Status: NEW
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P2
         Component: XQuery 1.1

Section 2 of the spec contains the following definitions:

[Definition: An item is either an atomic value or a node.]

[Definition: The term XDM instance is used, synonymously with the term value,
to denote an unconstrained sequence of nodes and/or atomic values in the data
model.]

Both of these definitions should also include function items.
