Hmmm. It appears there are (at least) two definitions of "tuple". See <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuple>, for instance. I guess you and the XQuery spec are using it in the relational database sense, whereas I had the definition from mathematics and programming languages in my head. I think it could bear clarification in the spec. -Michael Dyck
