University of Manchester studentships

Hi all,

Just a little announcement. The school of computer science at the
University of Manchester has (up to) 16 studentships starting next
year. I'm looking for graduate students as is Uli Sattler (and other
good folks here too, I'm sure). OWLesque projects of all sorts are
most welcome (though, natch, we do other things as well). I,
personally, really like to do things that mix theory, implementation,
and usability...good fun!

If you're interested, please feel free to contact me directly
(though, bone up on the Chomsky hierarchy first!). If you know
someone who might be interested, please pass this message on.

Thanks for your emailboxian indulgence.

Cheers,
Bijan.

PHD STUDENTSHIPS (UP TO 16)
IN THE SCHOOL OF COMPUTER SCIENCE
AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER

The School of Computer Science of the University of Manchester
(http://www.cs.manchester.ac.uk) has up to 16 studentships to
offer to highly motivated research students who wish to start
a PhD in September 2008 (in exceptional circumstances the start
date can be deferred until April 2009). The studentships pay
tuition fees and a stipend to cover living expenses for 3 years.
In 2008/09, the stipend will be £12940 per year for students
who were UK residents in the 3 years before the start of the PhD,
or between £10352 and £12940 per year for students who were not
UK residents in the same period and cannot demonstrate a relevant
connection to the UK. The stipend is expected to rise in subsequent
years. Because of conditions associated with this funding,
these studentships are open to students eligible for home
fees only; this includes UK and EU nationals.

The School of Computer Science of the University of Manchester
is one of the leading Schools in the UK renown for the excellence
of its research. The international reputation of its research
reflects on its 5* rating in the last national Research Assessment
Exercise (RAE), which places the School among the best 6 Computer
Science Departments in the UK. The School has a vibrant research
environment with more than 150 PhD students, 90 research staff
and 70 academic staff.

The studentships can cover research on any Computer Science topic.
The School has a wide spectrum of research activities in a number
of subject areas, ranging from engineering and systems to theory,
technology and applications including many interdisciplinary activities.
(see http://www.cs.manchester.ac.uk/research/groups/ for an overview
of the research activities of the School). Two of the studentships,
in particular, must relate to research in areas of interest to the
Medical Research Council (http://www.mrc.ac.uk/)

If you are interested, you are encouraged to approach potential
supervisors and suggest a possible PhD topic. A list of members
of the academic staff with their research interests is available from:
http://www.cs.manchester.ac.uk/aboutus/people/index.php?
category=academic

To submit an application, please follow the instructions available
from: http://www.cs.manchester.ac.uk/postgraduate/research/apply/

Applications will be processed in two phases. In the first phase,
your qualifications will be considered and, if approved, you will
