FW: Entries and Federation management tool - LATVIA

Dear all,

Not sure if we plan a meeting for this coming Wednesday, but the Latvian federation has an interesting system to share their results and the responsible person (Karlis) seemed keen to join the community. Could we give him 10mins presentation and we also introduce what we do?

Have a good start of the week.

Nicola,

At what time usually is the conference call? Probably I will be able to join and tell about what we have created so far!

Mirko,

Thank you for the formulas! Made some minor adjustments :) https://github.com/GlaivePro/IaafPoints/commit/bf3a337bedccf0a3f76b80daac02a81bc8aa2b6b#diff-0e256a9b3120c8ea4f19b568fc1ec78d

OK, it would have been great to meet you, as your system seems to have a lot of interesting features.
In fact, federations and vendors were able to present their system in Portugal, so we missed out not seeing your system.
However, our community of contributors have weekly conference calls on Wednesdays.
Here is the community: https://www.w3.org/community/opentrack/

And here is the repository about the standard: https://github.com/w3c/opentrack-cg

Tomorrow’s call is cancelled due to the Convention, but we will probably speak next Wednesday. Would you be able to join and tell us about your system? We always join the call through a screen share, for people to demonstrate their progress: Martin from W3C about the data standard, Any from ReportLab about the live capture system, etc…

I will not be going to Vilnius, I am not included in attendees list and instead the federation wants for me to get ready for our local conference on next Tuesday, so I will be busy preparing presentation for that.

Dear Nicola and Mirko,

About conferences in Portugal and Vilnius

Yes, I am interested, you can send me info. I have agreed to go to Vilnius, but that was long time ago. I will find out from my federation if I am still in attendees list and get back to you asap.

About statistics

We calculated IAAF points ourselves, here is our result https://github.com/GlaivePro/IaafPoints

But it would be interesting to compare the official formulas with the ones we calculated.

We have created an API for statistics, here is a short description - https://athletics.lv/lv/stats/api-description

And here are the stats - https://athletics.lv/en/stats

Here is an example of top results for 100m men in XML - https://athletics.lv/en/stats?discipline=7;em:1;w:2&venue-type=outdoor,road&gender=m&date-from=2017-01-01&date-to=2017-12-31&country=LVA&limit=50&athlete-limit=1&format=table&fields=athlete,result,current_coach,iaaf_points,date_of_birth,wind&format=xml

We will try to improve API so it is easier to select all competition results for a time period so each time someone wants to import, they just need to change dates "from" and "to" in the url and they will get all the results from our statistics

Dear Nicolas,

Unfortunately, it seems that I will have to skip conference in Portugal. But I can travel to Vilnius.

We are actively testing our system and adding new functions. It's work in progress and at the moment we have events, persons, organizations, start lists, results. Example - https://athletics.lv/en/competition/27306#round-27306+groups-of-the-round-27306

We want to calculate IAAF points for each result (not in combined events, but in standart events according to IAAF scoring tables). In order to do that, we need formulas. On their web page there is only huge PDF scoring table, which is not a reasonable option. We tried to contact National federation, IAAF, some programming communities, but haven't got any response. Maybe you can help with any tips, who should I contact regarding this question?

Best Regards,
Karlis Evertovskis

Dear Karlis,

Thank you for your feedback.

I have copied Mirko Jalava who manages Tilastopaja and all statistics at European Athletics.

Between the data in XML on a weekly basis or having an API, I will let Mirko answer this question.

For the conference in Portugal, unfortunately, this year’s conference is not yet part of the official development activities, so European Athletics is not paying for flights or accommodation. But we hope to see you anyway in Portugal. In case you cannot travel, the company working with us for the results app/entries/member federation management tool and Tilastopaja will be with us at the Convention in Vilnius (12-14 Oct) the week after our conference in Portugal.
The conference in Portugal is intended for technical people who have a system or are ready to contribute. Our presentation/activation at the Convention is more for federation with no system, to raise awareness on the fact that they need to share the results with us and that we can help with the relevant tools and app.

Dear Nicolas,

Sorry for the late reply

We can make XML for events/categories and send it weekly. But we can also make an API where you could set dates (from-to) and get all data for selected time period in XML (or JSON) format. In that case it wouldn't be necessary to send weekly emails, instead you can get data at any time and probably automate the process of data exchange.

Yes, I would like to attend conference about data standard in Portugal. Travel and accommodation expenses will be covered by European Athletics?

Dear Karlis,

I hope the implementation of the new platform is going well. Since you are developing this new platform, it is important that we stay in touch so that you can provide Tilastopaja with the Latvian results, while he could send you the Latvian results achieved abroad.

We are working with 2 separate schemes:

  * Or the federations sends us weekly their rankings, per category in XML format (see attached the example from Denmark)
  * Or the federation sends us the individual competition results per event (see the example of France with their U20 and U18 competitions)
Please let us know what can be done.

In the same subject, we are creating a standard to define how the data should be exchanged in the world of athletics, for all stakeholders. We will discuss this topic amongst others (like data privacy, management of entries, visualisation of results, etc…) at a conference organised by European Athletics on 5-6 October in Portugal.
Do you want me to keep you in the attendee list? We will send an official communication in the next 2 weeks.

Dear Nicolas,

Thank you for the test platform. I have analysed and reviewed functionality of the test environment. I tested opentrack.info<http://opentrack.info> too, where I found more functionality for the same platform (competitions, results, start lists). Platform gives us all the necessary functionality for managing athletic events.

We had a discussion about which platform we will be developing and decided that this season we will go forward with our own product, as we already have work in progress and we can create management system for public usage in a lot shorter time period and customise it for all the specific requirements that we have. At this moment we feel that it will take too much time and human resources to develop Opentrack solution for Latvian Athletic Federation in this season, given the circumstances.

We are looking forward to working with you in future as we are also interested to synchronise our data with Tilastopaja and European Athletics.

Best Regards,
Karlis Evertovskis

Dear Karlis,

Thank you for getting back to us. We would actually love to be able to present you what we are doing through a screenshare, as they is much more than the entries and federation management system. We are building an app to record results directly from competitions and to be uploaded, we are also creating a standard to facilitate the data exchange between athletics stakeholders; meanwhile, we are creating a community of service providers in the field of athletics to share best practice and tools available.

While you can think when we can chat and share through a screenshare, here are the accesses to the platforms developed:

Dear Nicolas,

Yes, I have a team and we are developing statistics and competition management system for Latvian Athletic Federation. We already have the same functionality with mapping athletes, competitions etc. as in your pilot project for Estonian Federation. And we have imported statistics for last 12 years.

I would be more interested in the system architecture and options to customize the project created by ReportLab if we want to add more functionality - create more top-lists, generate starting lists, create custom rankings for coaches, clubs, athletes, creating API for online results, keep track of national records in all age groups and maybe something else. And of course importing statistics for previous years. In order to do that, I would like to have access to a Demo version or duplicated version of your project, so that we could figure out the best solution for all involved parties.

As of now I see three options:
a) we continue to develop our own system, which we can customize and use for all local events and add any functionality we want
b) we stop our project and instead use system created by ReportLab
c) we develop our own system and create an API to synchronize data with the main EA database

To decide with which option we go forward this season, I would appreciate if I could test your system at least from admin panel. After that we could organise a screenshare for a discussion.

Best Regards,
Karlis Evertovskis

Dear Karlis,

Dmitijs told me that the Latvian Federation is working with you in the field of statistics. European Athletics has the goal to collect more results and data from its Members Federations, in a more automated way. One wayto do so is to develop tool for our federations to better manage their data, while being shared with our statistician. To do this, European Athletics has jointly developed a Federation management system with ReportLab, through a pilot project with the Estonian Federation (https://estonia.opentrack.run/). This multi-lingual entry and member federation management tool was recently completed so it can now be duplicated for other federations.
You will see from the homepage the various services offered. The main goal is to map all the athletes, clubs, competitions and venues of in the concerned country.

We could organise a screenshare with you, Dmitrijs and our partner ReportLab, to discuss our possible collaboration.

We look forward to discussing this topic with you.

Dear Nicolas.

Thank you so much for your email and information regarding the pilot project in Estonia.
Sorry for not replying sooner, but we are extremly busy with overtaking our federation work, since we have a new president Ineta Radevica.
We are also very interested in this kind of a project and would like to know more about the system itself and how can we apply it to our already existing statistics format.
Last year our federation hired a company who started something simular what you are doing for Estonia. The guy in charge is Karlis Evertovskis. He is a man to talk with regarding the cooparation since he is a very technical man and knows our needs. I am including him to this email.
We would be very happy to get in touch with you whenever you have a chance. Just let us know when you have a free time.

Dear Ineta, Dear Dmitrijs,

Sirje from the Estonian Federation told me that you discussed about the Entries and Federation management tool we created, as a pilot project, with their help.

ReportLab (Andy, the CEO of the company is copied in this e-mail) helped us develop this multi-lingual entry and member federation management tool for the Estonian federation (https://estonia.opentrack.run/). As the project is now complete, it can be duplicated for other federations.
You will see from the homepage the various services offered. The main goal is to map all the athletes, clubs, competitions and venues of your country. Once this is done, you can manage the entries of the competitions and export it to the results system of the federation. You can also see that it covers statistics, showing the rankings and athletes’ profiles. All statistics come from Tilastopaja (see Gert Kanter<https://estonia.opentrack.run/people/ba75a2d7-1d31-4603-b236-053199e12660/>’s profile).

In addition, we are implementing a live results platform to capture the results of your competitions, to be directly available online and published. This 2nd project is currently being developed and will be ready for the summer season.

Please let me know if you want that I organise a screenshare (like a Skype where we can show you the services of the platform) with ReportLab for you and any people in the federation interested in this solution.

We look forward to showing more of what this tool can bring to your federation.
