It can be done. Here's the test results on Benetech's Math Support Finder:

There's a link on that page to a sample PDF file with MathML. The only assistive technology that has bothered to support MathML in PDF is NVDA (when you have MathPlayer installed). Then there's the issue of creating the files in the first place--there are no automated tools to create such files...they have to be hand-coded.

My Google sleuthing skills are failing me. Can anyone point me to the announcement that PDF supports MathML (although it's limited from what I remember and/or requires MathPlayer or something like that).
