JAWS, the example-to-follow when it comes to @longdesc, announces the presence
of a longdesc URL *after* it has read the @alt text, with these words:

  ]] Press enter for long description [[

Is there any reason why

  <a href="URL" rel="longdesc"><img src="*" alt="*"/></a>

can't be presented the same way? 

(Perhaps with the addition of the word 'link' at the end of the sentence?)
