Response to OMA liaison of September 2006

The W3C Device Descriptions Working Group (DDWG) and Device Independence
Working Group (DIWG) would like to thank the OMA DCAP group for its
comments [1]. The comments relate to the DDWG's so-called 'top-N'
device characteristics. These resulted from a survey of the DDWG
membership in which they were asked to identify those characteristics of
devices that were most important to content adaptation.

Within W3C both the DDWG and the DIWG have a particular interest in such
characteristics. Within OMA, DCAP also has an interest in device
characteristics in its work on DPE. All three groups have a need for an
appropriate vocabulary for such characteristics.

DIWG and DDWG would like to suggest that development of a vocabulary for
device characteristics could benefit from collaboration with OMA DCAP.
DDWG and DIWG would further like to suggest that such a vocabulary might
be based on the initial ontology work that was presented at the recent
DCAP face-to-face meeting in San Francisco [2]. That ontology itself is
based on UAProf 2. During the first day of the DDWG face-to-face meeting
in Boston, under topic 7, the group formally resolved to consider
feedback from the OMA with respect to the development of the ontology
for device properties.

The availability of people who are members of DIWG, DDWG and OMA DCAP
would seem to provide a possible vehicle for that collaboration. DIWG
and DDWG look forward to a fruitful collaboration with DCAP on the
subject of device characteristics.

Best wishes

Rotan Hanrahan, chair DDWG
Rhys Lewis, chair DIWG
