Jo,

 

I deployed a content adaptation solution for a couple of South American
networks for the football World Cup, and with virtually no promotion, usage
climbed quite sharply. They key was having the first link on their WAP
homepage going to a mini portal with links to adapted pages.

 

Usage really climbed though when a 'Go To' box was placed on the WAP
homepage. This was done after the WC had finished, and again, with little
promotion.

 

Since then, usage has subsided, which I do believe now is down to lack of
promotion, showing that the initial usage enjoyed the 'new & wow' factor.

 

The technology behind the content adaptation solutions still has some way to
go before the mobile user is really able to use their phone for many of the
things they would traditionally use a PC for,  but great strides have been
made over the previous 2 years. I do agree though that there are some basics
that haven't been taken care of, and Novarra are not the only culprits.
There is also the great debate of what the adaptation proxy should and
shouldn't do, for example, should it insert itself into the HTTPS path (by
link fixup) such that the mobile can perform secure transactions but without
needing a secure OTA segment (i.e. only the internet segment)?
