Constructive Feedback on the New W3C Logo

My name is Isabella Brown.

I am writing to share respectful feedback regarding the new logo introduced in October 2025. The abstract coil design has an unintended resemblance that many perceive as phallic. This interpretation is shared by myself, a few colleagues/friends in the web community, and has been publicly noted by others, including W3C contributors.

The shape creates discomfort in professional and educational settings. As one former W3C team member wrote on this list: “[It] can accidentally make people I teach uncomfortable... The penis and balls...”

This reduces the logo’s effectiveness for outreach, presentations, and broad adoption. As examples, some organizations quickly addressed similar visual issues after community feedback (e.g., the 2022 Australian government women’s network logo).

I totally understand rebranding involves significant effort and that interpretations can be subjective, but when multiple members of the community independently raise the same issue shortly after launch, it suggests a real problem.

Please consider modifications to the symbol, allow continued use of the previous iconic logo in contexts where the new one may distract, and gather broader community input via a short survey or discussion thread.

I have emailed about this previously, but with new CEO in place, I wanted to raise it again constructively.
