Let's hope that this shift in emphasis over the years from the letter of the normative documents in WCAG to the spirit of the informative documents doesn't bedevil any future versions of the specification ...

I'd say that's an overly tight/lawyerly interpretation. The intention of the definition and the SC is fairly clear that it's about messages/"things" that count as messages to the user and that a sighted non-SR user will perceive but an SR user may miss out on.
