Title: Liaison Statement on MPEG-DASH

ISO/IEC JTC1/SC29/WG11 (MPEG) would like to inform you about the recent MPEG-DASH standard development.

At our 105^th meeting in Vienna, we finalized

• ISO/IEC 23009-1 FDAM 1: Support for Event Messages and extended Audio Channel Configuration
• ISO/IEC 23009-2: FDIS: DASH Conformance and reference software
• ISO/IEC 23009-3 TR: Implementation Guidelines
• ISO/IEC 23001-7 2^nd Edition DIS: Common encryption format for ISO base media file format

We recently held a workshop on DASH session management and control and concluded that DASH streaming may be improved if DASH server and client establish a direct channel for sending messaging regarding session management and control.  For instance, a server may signal the client on up-coming media blackouts in a live streaming session, or recommend a temporary use of a subset of representation in a given adaptation set due to the general network condition, or change of CDN due to availability of a new CDN. We are also gathering various use cases and technical requirements for communication, expect to complete them at our next MPEG meeting and interested to receive any relevant use cases from you in this regard.
