discussion on using optional elements in the example in the above email
<johnarwe> <alternate sml:ref'="true">
<johnarwe> <altprop1> foo </..>

<pratul> Why does the producer say sml:ref="true" here?

John: Do we think that there is enough value in having the concept of a null reference
general agreement
John: second question is whether sml: target Required=true should allow null references
Kirk: would like to see proposal in writing before agreeing to this
Discussion: we have a general discussion about what it means to have tergetRequired=true and then have a null ref. But this depends on how we define targetRequired=true.
John: If we use the following
definition, if targetRequired=true then null refs are not
allowed. And null refs are only valid when when targetRequired
is false or not specified. Do we need some other semantic
representation for Sandy's case.
... are there any objections to saying targetRequired=true
prohibits null references
we have consensus
John: third case for discussion
then is empty references
... is everyone commfortable with saying that we don't have
empty references
<johnarwe> <alternate sml:ref'="true"/>
the scribe has a hard stop at 1
<johnarwe> <alternate sml:ref'="true" sml:null="true"/>
<johnarwe> will continue this via email
