Abstract

Ruby, a form of interlinear annotation, are short runs of text alongside the base text. They are typically used in East Asian documents to indicate pronunciation or to provide a short annotation. 

This specification revises and extends the markup model established by HTML to express ruby.

This section describes the status of this document at the time of its publication. A list of current W3C publications and the latest revision of this technical report can be found in the W3C standards and drafts index. 

This document was produced by the Internationalization Working Group as a Candidate Recommendation Snapshot using the Recommendation track. This document is intended to become a W3C Recommendation. This document will remain a Candidate Recommendation at least until 3 July 2026 in order to ensure the opportunity for wide review.
