>> Add HTML to the possible annotation bodies #2942 [2] >> […] >> [2] https://github.com/w3c/epub-specs/issues/2942 > I usually can’t quite stay up this late, but I will attempt to join this week to discuss this. The GitHub discussion about the inclusion of Ruby here has me wondering about how embedded annotations (in the published work, not user annotations), overlaps entirely with the use case of popup footnotes, with the same pain: inability currently to use HTML markup to provide proper formattings of footnotes. Curious what other people’s perspectives are on this. If we are going to solve the issue of being able to apply Ruby to annotations, it makes sense to make popup footnotes also properly support ruby. I don’t have a depth of knowledge at all about the nuances of restricted HTML markup, but my naive take here is that that is the right path forward for its simplicity. Markdown doesn’t have Ruby and any extension we chose would put a parsing and editing burden on implementing reading and publishing systems.
