I know this issue well. These articles (in Japanese) are lengthy, but they
provide a thorough discussion of the issue.

Some of these issues can be addressed by enhancing the CSS transform
property. However, it is not possible to make all such adjustments
completely automatic.

I strongly believe that the lack of a perfect, fully automatic
transformation should not be used as a reason not to introduce switching
between vertical and horizontal writing modes. I know that some Japanese
users with dyslexia have *very* serious difficulties with vertical writing.
