 From the same document, a few paragraphs below:

   "In addition, for any of the types, the literal value *any* may
    be used as the value of the step attribute. This keyword
    indicates that any value may be used (within the bounds of
    other restrictions placed on the control).

      The following control would allow any floating point number:

      <input type="number" step="any" name="n">
