COGA: Action items from August 27

Hello,

We spent the call today talking about the time-sensitive agenda items that came up this week.

Publication of the updated WCAG 3 Working Draft is now targeted for early September. As part of our normal publishing process a Pre-Call for Consensus (Pre-CFC) for Section 3 and 4 are being sent out this week for feedback by Sunday night.

Timing is tight, but that is because we’ve had a very full summer of wrangling all of the ideas and needs contained in these two sections. That has challenged us to meet our goal of publishing two working draft versions a year.

---

NOTE - As we head into our COGA summer break, please do not feel that you need to drop everything and conduct a detailed review. The purpose of the Pre-CFC process is to help identify potential showstoppers or significant issues that should not be published, rather than to complete a comprehensive review. After our break we will develop a plan for a deeper COGA TF review of both Sections 3 and 4.

---

The details:

    Section 3: Conformance, Developing

  * A formal Pre-CFC (Call for Consensus) was started this week via an email titled “Action: Review Pre-CFC Section 3 Conformance before end of day August 30th” sent by Rachael Bradley-Montgomery.

  * It continues to have open questions, particularly around the distinction between core and supplemental requirements and the role of core assertions.

  * Links and feedback details are in Rachael’s email.

   Section 4, Exploratory

  * Several areas are rough drafts and not final decisions. This includes the reporting tiers, the current definition of "harm", and the functional performance statements (expanded) list.

  *
We spent a considerable amount of time thinking about the functional performance statements. Some of the wording felt cobbled together, incomplete, and potentially insensitive. We know that was not the intention of the editors and we’d like to spend time working on recommendations (GitHub issues) in the coming months focused on refining the list.
  *
As of this email, I don’t see Rachael’s email about the pre-CFC for Section 4: Progress towards and beyond conformance, Exploratory. Be on the look out for that email with links and feedback details.

Thank you for your continued engagement and any feedback you want to share for these reviews as we move through this accelerated review period.
