"but not both" is misleading

In Section 6 of the XML Recommandation, the semantics of 
"|" is explained as below.

A | B 
    matches A or B but not both.


My colleagues in a Japanese mailing for XML argue that this is wrong
or at least misleading.  If something matches both A and B, 
does it match A | B ?
