After reading about Gaulish, I thought I'd ask this: I've been using fr-x-rn to identify Renaissance and 17th C French (x-rn is experimental since there is not a tag though there is clearly a Renaissance vocabulary that is in some ways reminiscent of Old French--medieval French--but is quite distinct from it). But I note that that the French from the New World at the time of the Renaissance & 17th C has some particularities of its own: For example, 'canot,' an Indian word, is used for canoes, boats; other native words are 'calumet' (the peace pipe); 'mahis' (maize); and the French 'boeufs' is used to mean 'bison' rather than 'cattle'; 'traitta' is often used to mean that a group did a combination of trading and treatying. There are a few more oddities as far as I can tell; I'm not an expert though. Is a tag like: fr-US-X-rn excessive? Given that with the popularity of stories/journals from the new world these words were probably getting to be well-known back in France; and given that France served as the location for publishing of these journals? Or would such a tag be helpful; there is clearly a U.S. variety of French today, in Louisiana, but it's "Accadian;" there's also "Cajun" which combines English and French I guess. But the 17th century is too early for that yet. Thanks for any comments; also will a Renaissance subtag or a Cajun subtag ever be part of the tags on the lists? Think we need a Renaissance subtag for some languages. --CEW >From: Frank Ellermann <nobody@xyzzy.claranet.de> >To: www-international@w3.org >Subject: Re: What to do with Gaulish >Date: Wed, 08 Nov 2006 18:54:39 +0100 >MIME-Version: 1.0 >Received: from frink.w3.org ([128.30.52.16]) by >bay0-mc7-f7.bay0.hotmail.com with Microsoft SMTPSVC(6.0.3790.2444); Wed, 8 >Nov 2006 10:11:46 -0800 >Received: from lists by frink.w3.org with local (Exim 4.50)id >1GhrsW-0000wc-Scfor www-international-dist@listhub.w3.org; Wed, 08 Nov 2006 >18:10:24 +0000 >Received: from lisa.w3.org ([128.30.52.41])by frink.w3.org with esmtp (Exim >4.50)id 1GhrsT-0000vO-DWfor www-international@listhub.w3.org; Wed, 08 Nov >2006 18:10:21 +0000 >Received: from main.gmane.org ([80.91.229.2] helo=ciao.gmane.org)by >lisa.w3.org with esmtp (Exim 4.50)id 1GhrsJ-0005w7-84for >www-international@w3.org; Wed, 08 Nov 2006 18:10:21 +0000 >Received: from root by ciao.gmane.org with local (Exim 4.43)id >1GhrsA-0006K0-Hcfor www-international@w3.org; Wed, 08 Nov 2006 19:10:02 >+0100 >Received: from du-001-053.access.de.clara.net ([212.82.227.53]) by >main.gmane.org with esmtp (Gmexim 0.1 (Debian)) id 1AlnuQ-0007hv-00 > for <www-international@w3.org>; Wed, 08 Nov 2006 19:10:02 +0100 >Received: from nobody by du-001-053.access.de.clara.net with local (Gmexim >0.1 (Debian)) id 1AlnuQ-0007hv-00 for ><www-international@w3.org>; Wed, 08 Nov 2006 19:10:02 +0100 >Received: pass (lisa.w3.org: domain of w3-www-international@m.gmane.org >designates 80.91.229.2 as permitted sender) >X-Message-Info: LsUYwwHHNt3B+d0IgjKXvE4tiVN4OdNZvuq9aD8I1k0= >X-Injected-Via-Gmane: http://gmane.org/ >Organization: <URL:http://purl.net/xyzzy> >Lines: 31 >References: <711a73df0611071034m49df62e5m4890d3f1a1396815@mail.gmail.com> ><20061107192559.GB19712@ccil.org> <1945065887.20061108114047@w3.org> ><4551F966.5660@xyzzy.claranet.de> <725480757.20061108172803@w3.org> >X-Complaints-To: usenet@sea.gmane.org >X-Gmane-NNTP-Posting-Host: du-001-053.access.de.clara.net >X-Mailer: Mozilla 3.0 (OS/2; U) >X-W3C-Hub-Spam-Status: No, score=-2.1 >X-W3C-Scan-Sig: lisa.w3.org 1GhrsJ-0005w7-84 >52955c87040e9c1416b4ffa16346ccbc >X-Original-To: www-international@w3.org >X-Archived-At: http://www.w3.org/mid/455219DF.3FE0@xyzzy.claranet.de >Resent-From: www-international@w3.org >X-Mailing-List: <www-international@w3.org> archive/latest/4869 >X-Loop: www-international@w3.org >Resent-Sender: www-international-request@w3.org >Precedence: list >List-Id: <www-international.w3.org> >List-Help: <http://www.w3.org/Mail/> >List-Unsubscribe: ><mailto:www-international-request@w3.org?subject=unsubscribe> >Resent-Message-Id: <E1GhrsW-0000wc-Sc@frink.w3.org> >Resent-Date: Wed, 08 Nov 2006 18:10:24 +0000 >Return-Path: www-international-request@listhub.w3.org >X-OriginalArrivalTime: 08 Nov 2006 18:11:47.0444 (UTC) >FILETIME=[5ADC3340:01C70361] > > >Chris Lilley wrote: > > > FE> If for some reason a variant gaulish is registered later > > > I plan to, once I can figure out how to do it.
