your concern is well meant, and expressed, thanks!

rather I believe that the majority of authors consider the illiterate  
"not worth catering to".

well, my expectation is that:
W3C involve naive users in developing specifications.
WAI would recommend providing easy to read versions, symbol versions  
etc. ie LD get a look in.
Google launch and popularise a reading-ability algorithm beta.
....
there again opinions are two a penny...

We've missed the chance to interrogate Marcel Marceau, but in all  
probability it might be difficult to find the means to communicate  
his work through other non-visual media. The artist has the right to  
create original work in their chosen media.

It's not helpful to insist on alt, except for mundane shopping sites  
and the like.
