Re: F2F meeting: September 14 and/or 15

I didn’t respond because I can’t make any of the possible dates I’m afraid (I’ll be teaching XSLT somewhere else)

Then I learned that it is next to impossible to get hotel rooms at these
dates in Cologne or in Frankfurt because large trade fairs are happening
in both cities. Therefore we settled for a city in the Cologne area
where hotel rooms are in decent supply: Aachen. Aachen has the
additional benefit that it is even faster to get there by train from
Paris or London.

Depending on the agenda that we still have to flesh out, we’ll have
either a full day from 10:00 to 17:00 on the 15th or a session from
13:00 or 14:00 to 18:00 on the 14th and more sessions between 9:30 and
16:00 on the 15th.

We are currently securing a meeting room. We have also made tentative
reservations with Hotel am Marschiertor (close to main station) for 8
single rooms at € 85 per night.

For people from the London area, Eurostar to Bruxelles Midi and Thalys
or ICE trains from there to Aachen might be the best option. Due to the
travel time and the time difference, though, it will be difficult to
make it to Aachen before noon, therefore the option to start just after
lunch on the 14th. But even if it will be a single-day event, most
people will prefer to arrive on the 14th, so you’ll probably still need
the room and we can explore the local pub scene on the eve of the 15th.

You can use https://www.b-europe.com/EN in order to find train
connections from London (also from Paris, Lille, or Brussels).

Train travel times (in hours) from:

London St Pancras 3.5–4.5
Paris Nord 2.5–3.5
Bruxelles Midi 1.0–1.5
Leipzig, Berlin, or Wolfenbüttel 5.5–6.5
Brisbane n/a (sorry Conal)

The next major airports are Cologne, Düsseldorf, and Brussels. A train
or bus journey from each airport will take approx 1.5 hrs.
