Thanks, but... yeah, that would mean interpreting the image file format binary information I suppose... That is extremely low level indeed. Anyone ever did that?

  You should be able to use the EXPath Binary module through Saxon, but that might be a bit low-level... <http://expath.org/spec/binary>
