Has the XML schema been approved and finalized?

I would like to take advantage of XML schemas as it seems of more benefit to me than than a DTD.

Has the W3C finalized and approved a version of XML schemas?  I havent seen anything on the web to indicate that this has been finalized yet.

Does anyone know when they are expecting the first XML schema version to be released?  My company will not accept anything unless it is stamped and branded as 'final' even though I think the beta schema definition is somewhat widely used and accepted.
