Dan Connolly has very nicely summarized the situation, and eased the 
sting of being flamed by the director of the W3C, if only by 
implication, as one of the great clueless XML crowd.

However, I'd like to withdraw the harsh tone of my reply to the 
flame, my point that disagreement is not the same as lack of 
understanding was made very nicely by several other people.

It's good to know that the actual history is relatively well 
understood within the W3C staff.
