sender/receiver ids transmitted within xml documents...

I am relatively new to xml but we are receiving xml documents via the
internet onto a server from which our software tries to identify from whom
the data is from and to whom it is being sent.  How do I go about setting
this up?  I have a DTD but no information about sender or receiver.
