I totally agree.  If the intent is to leverage the familiar concept of
RPC, then you it's not fair to developer's mindset to cross your fingers
behind your back.

An RPC-style request deserves an RPC-style response.  That response may
just be "ack" or "data coming out of band" or something similar.
