Ray et al,
I agree, Z39.50 is an example of a long running process. So how about:

DS8  Two partners are engaged in a long-running process which involves
multiple message
                exchanges. Examples of such processes may be complex supply
chain management,
                dynamic manufacturing scheduling or information retrieval.
There may be multiple
     instances of the same business process in progress between the same
two partners.
