I don't see a problem with re-using meta-characters across
truncation attributes. If we use different characters for
every type of truncation then we'll be running out of
characters before too long. Most OSes and users seem to
get along fine with the different meaning of "?" in
grep/perl/etc and filename globbing at the command line.
