NISO's New Z39.50 Profile Standards Activity

[Excuse the cross-postings to the ZIG List, the Bath Profile List, and
the TZIG List. Please forward to others if appropriate.]

The National Information Standards Organization has established a
standards committee (Standards Committee AV) to produce a National
Z39.50 Profile for Library Applications. This new work will build on
recent state, national, and international profiling efforts to improve
Z39.50 use in library applications. The national profile will be a
compatible superset of The Bath Profile: An International Z39.50
Specification for Library Applications and Resource Discovery. The NISO
profile will extend the Bath Profile specifications to address specific
national search and retrieval requirements. NISO will ballot the draft
national profile through its regular standards development and approval
procedures. The result will be an American National Standard. The work
on the national profile and its approval are expected to be completed by
Summer 2001.(Full press release at:
