ALA SESSION FOR VENDORS AND CONSORTIA INTERESTED IN TESTING THE DRAFT NISO
CIRCULATION INTERCHANGE PROTOCOL

Library systems vendors and other potential implementers of the NISO
Circulation Interchange Protocol Standard (NCIP) interested in testing the
draft standard, are invited to attend a working meeting at ALA Midwinter on
Monday, January 15, 2001 from 2-4pm (NOT in the Innovative Interfaces Suite
in the Grand Hyatt Hotel, Washington, DC., but ) in the Renaissance
Washington Hotel, Meeting Room 4. The purpose of the meeting is to
introduce vendors and implementers to the standard and prepare for trial
implementations to take place in 2001 to ensure that the protocol meets the
needs of the information community.

Participants in the January 15 meeting will receive copies of the draft
standard and the cross-application profile. Committee members will give a
walkthrough of the standard, and address practical implementation questions
including encoding and transport, and answer questions. This working
meeting will also provide a forum for vendors to meet to discuss possible
collaborations for interoperability testing of the protocol.

NISO strongly urges vendors and organizations involved in direct consortial
borrowing, self-service circulation and interlibrary loan to consider coming
forward to test parts of the protocol. "The final success of any standard
depends on widespread, rigorous testing at an interim stage," noted Pat
Stevens, chair of the NISO Circulation Interchange Protocol (CIP) Committee..
"Early implementers will have an opportunity to shape the final version of
the standard and will help NISO and the information marketplace in bringing
this much-needed protocol to completion and adoption." The protocol
facilitates the interchange of circulation information between different
circulation applications, and between circulation and interlibrary loan
applications. Pat Stevens points out that "this new protocol will enable
libraries running different integrated library systems to interoperate and
share their circulation information. Using the protocol, library users will
be able to borrow across library systems and enjoy seamless interlibrary
loan, and potentially access a wider array of resources."

The draft standard for trial use will be submitted to NISO in mid-December
2000 and will be available on the NISO website at: http://www.niso.org
