animation within pdf

I have xml with image references to static images, which is great for 
print pdfs.  The xml also contains some references to such things as 
animated gifs.  We would like to use the animated gifs within the pdf for 
on-line browsing.  Has anyone done this?  So far google has given me much 
hope.  Any ideas?
