Length and offset of Text Data

Hello,
I was wondering, if there is any solution, to define the length and offset
of the text.like if i have a text being obtained from the xml document and i
define its certain length, then it should give the output till the defined
length and discard any extra text.
I think i've elaborated my problem very well...
