Dates in XSL:FO

In our XML all dates are in the form YYYYMMDD. I would like to display them
as MM/DD/YYYY. 
I know in the past when I had looked for a way to do this I was unsuccessful
but I thought I would try again.

Is there any XSL:FO tags to handle the formatting of dates or will there be
any soon?
Is there another way to do the same thing?
