Welcome to the XSLTalk Email Discussion FAQ

This FAQ is posted to the XSLTalk email group every two weeks by TopXML where this list is hosted.

Didn't this used to be hosted by VBXML.COM?
-- Yes, TopXML is the same team, just a better name indicating a better coverage of the topic.

When did XSLTalk start?
-- In mid 1999, XSLTalk grew out of a need to 'talk XSL' and to learn about it. IE5 was just a glimmer in Bill's eye. Ah, those were the days! Anyone remember the 'browser wars'? Since then, we have seen perhaps ten thousand members come and go.

Does XSLTalk have other discussion lists focussing on other aspects of XML?
-- Yes. At the website http://www.topxml.com you can join XSLTalk, WAPTalk, BizTalk and DataFrameworks (for SOAP and OO development topics).

What's acceptable on the list?
-- The XSLTalk list is intended for working stiffs who need to get to grips with XML in their real day-to-day jobs. This is a hands-on group. Until now, everyone has pitched in to help their fellow man and woman.

What's NOT acceptable on the list?
-- Don't spam the list with your products. This is not your ideal target market, no matter how good it looks! :)
-- If you are a regular contributor, then it's OK to tell us about what you are doing - you deserve to make a few sales! But for everyone else, get involved first, ask some questions and answer a few.
-- Watch those out of office messages! They can double back into the group and set up a loop.

So, how do I promote my product to the 160 000+ visitors to TopXML each month?
--Write an article for TopXML . Just a few pages gets you some fame. Any topic to do with XML is acceptable.

There is too much XSLTalk email each day, it's driving me nuts and filling up my inbox!
-- No problem. Simply log into http://www.yahoogroups.com (using your email address), click on "MY GROUPS" and change your setting from "Individual Emails" to "Daily Digest". NOTE: YahooGroups might make you get a Yahoo email account.

Still, I would prefer to talk online rather than via email
-- No problem. Thanks to Kurt Cagle, we also have online messageboards which DO NOT synch with this email group. You can read them here: http://www.topxml.com/messageboards

I have a complaint/question/compliment
-- Send all of the above via email to suggest@topxml.com

Who can I contact to discuss XSLTalk with?
-- To discuss XSLTalk email group, contact Trace via email at tracewilson@topxml.com

So, who is TopXML?
-- Many people build many different parts of TopXML, to find out who to contact, look here: http://www.topxml.com/admin/whoarewe.asp
-- Product developers especially should contact TopXML with respect to promoting their products, or at least having the product reviewed

Is there anything else I should read before getting involved?
-- More information on the liability and ownership of TopXML can be found here: http://www.topxml.com/admin/default.asp

What is a good question to send in? or... How do I get a reply?
-- a good question is one which explains the problem AND includes source code which demonstrates the problem you are having
-- a poor question is one which is unlikely to get an answer, is one which has no souce code and is vague and open ended like "I don't understand how to use the DOM" (or something like that)

Right, I am ready to go! Where do I start?
-- While everyone on XSLTalk is *very* happy to help newbies, we suggest that you cut your teeth by reading the content on the website: http://www.topxml.com
-- then download the 100+ free source code applications on the website:
http://www.topxml.com/downloads
-- and lastly, use the TopXML search engine on the website to find out if your question is already dealt with. Do a search here:
http://www.topxml.com/search
-- having done that for an hour and you still don't 'get' it... go for it, send your email into the XSLTalk email list

Any last suggestions?
-- Get a cool signiature in your email - mention TopXML! Roll up your sleeves and have fun - this is a place of learning and fun.

Thanks,
Mark Wilson
