yes, i was simply guessing and made no systematic tests. the performance
differences, however, were dramatic, so at least it is safe to say that
something significant was going on (or going wrong), and that the
implementation had some significant performance issues with the combination of
XML/XSLT i was using.

(i would still take a bet that i am right; but i probably shouldn't... :-)
