Clause 2.5.2 "Primitive vs. derived datatypes" (http://www.w3.org/TR/xmlschema-2/#value-space) contains (in the last sentence before clause 2.5.2.1 "Derived by restriction") " ... or 3) by creating a ·union· datatype whose ·value space· consists of the union of the ·value space· its ·memberTypes·.
