Ethiopic XML Proposal Final Version [6/02]

Hi All:

The final version of our proposal for Ethiopic XML is
now available. The document is entitled: Need for
Revision of XML 1.0 to account for Localization Issues
with Particular Emphasis on Ethiopic Script and
Writing System.

The objectives of the document are:

1) through sample XML codes and DTDs for various
applications (eCommerce, telemedicine, and calendar),
demonstrate that the use of non-Ethiopic script or
transliteration is inadequate, inconvenient and in
some cases erroneous for XML documents marked-up for
use by speakers of one or more of the major Ethiopian
languages.

2) demonstrate correct Ethiopic XML marked-up
documents through the use of example XML codes and
DTDs, hypothetically supported by Unicode 3.1.

3) recommendations for the inclusion of U+1361 (Hulet
Netib) as a valid name character and U+1372 - U+137C
as valid numeric characters that can be used in XML
tags. This is suggested (i.e., inclusion of U+1361) to
be used as a preferabble style of writing XML name
tags in Ethiopic.

4) demonstrate a relevant example in telemedicine that
demonstrates a real need for support in XML for
Ethiopic name tags.

5) include a review of the status of Romanization in
both HTML and XML languages for Ethiopic script users,
how widespread it is, what standardization exist, if
any, and how readily it is understood and its
drawbacks.

This final version incoporates the feedback we
received from the ETXML Interest Group. We are very
much indebted for all the positive and valuable
feedback.
