Introduction

I am a senior lecturer in AI at the "Vrije Universiteit" in Amsterdam, where I lead the research group on Knowledge Representation and Reasoning.

I have been doing KR since my Ph.D. days in Edinburgh, ranging from work on Knowledge Engineering methodologies to work on meta-languages and reflective systems to work on model-based diagnosis, and a bit of theorem proving on the side.

Together with Ian (you just saw his introduction), I was involved in the early days of developing OIL [1], and its later merge into DAML+OIL. I am also involved in various European projects that aim to either develop new Semantic Web technology (e.g. WonderWeb, [2]) or apply Semantic Web technology for various purposes, such as Knowledge Management (On-To-Knowledge, [3]) or service composition (IBROW, [4]).

Logicians think my work is applied,
industrial people think its theoretical...

(and yes, it really does have a negative elevation, this is The Netherlands, after all:-).
