Subject: WCA call for input

WG Chair,

As you may be aware, the Web Characterization Activity (WCA) has been
approved by the Advisory Committee and the kick-off workshop was hosted by
the W3C at M.I.T on November 5, 1998 [1][2]. By answering specific
questions, the WCA WG serves to link bulk data providers and consumers of
characterization information (e.g., other W3C WGs). In this manner, the
WCA can provide other WGs with information about how Web technologies are
being used. This process is intended to help facilitate more informed
decisions by other WGs while helping steer the WCA towards answering
salient issues.

This is where you, as Chair of your WG, fit in. The WCA is requesting
each WG with characterization issues submit a set of questions by May 15,
1999. The WCA will then triage the set of questions into three categories:
1) can definitely answer, 2) can possibly answer, and 3) can not answer.
Final responses will be provided to each working group by August 25, 1998.
The WCA understands that certain Working Groups may not currently have the
need for such characterization information.

As an example of the type of questions the WCA can handle, please see
the questions raised by the HTTP-NG PDG [3] that were answered in January
1998.

We are in the process of setting up a Web-based submission form to
facilitate letting us know your groups set of questions. In the mean time,
please send your questions to www-wca@w3.org.

Regards,
Jim Pitkow
