I may decide to redesign this old site, as long as I can keep its look similar so the client doesn't notice. Having a page validate does indeed effect its rankings though, make no mistake. I run an SEO program daily which supports this.

But as mentioned some of the errors are acceptable. According to validator.w3.org, Google and Yahoo! both contain errors (Google doesn't even have much code) - so I don't take the validator too seriously.

As told to me from one reply HTML 5 is on the horizon and will be more forgiving, so it's better to wait and let nature take its course and not fuss over validation!
