the checkbox "Clean up Markup with HTML Tidy" does nothing

In a webpage containing errors of the sort that are corrected by tidy  
(http://ereimer.net/an-untidy-page.htm)  I get the exact same results 
when the "Clean up Markup with HTML Tidy" checkbox is checked, as when 
it isn't.  Did I misunderstand the purpose of that checkbox?
