Well, the reason for the error IS the "--" inside the comment:

... but the bigger problem is that XHTML is not HTML and the old "Hide
scripts from Netscape 2 era and earlier" hack isn't compatible with
XHTML (since its a real comment, not part of the script that should be
ignored).

Take the comment out entirely, then see the resources mentioned in
this message: http://www.w3.org/mid/20070123185617.GC3148@us-lot.org

(It might take a little while to appear in on the web, its just been
