"/" in normal text confuses end tag detection?

Hi there,

When I tried to validate some document I received the following error:

--- quote ---

Error Line 156 column 39: end tag for "FONT" omitted, but its declaration does
not permit this.

      <font size="-1"> Sa &amp; So, 24./25. September</font><br><b>Basics und Au

--- end quote ---

The validator marked the slash between "24." and "25." as place of the error.

The document is dynamically created, that's why I don't include a link here (but
I can provide a snapshot if desired).

It's meant to be HTML 4.01 Transitional.

Is that an error with the validator?
Am I missing something obvious...??
Do you need more detail / context?

Thanks for any hint,
 Frank Suchy
