Not all deprecated IMG attributes caught by validator

For XHTML 1.0/Transitional typed documents, I couldn't help noticing that 
the validator catches deprecated IMG attributes such as BORDER, WIDTH and 
HEIGHT, unless the IMG tag also contains ALT="".

Why is this?
