Thanks, Liam!  I failed to mention that I use XHTML 1.0 Transitional.
I'm sure the HTML 4 definition applies.  It sure explains why I got no
complaint from the validator.  Let this be a heads up to anyone who
likes using the button tag instead of "input type='button'".  I use it
because its easy to control with CSS.
