Turns out to be that this was due to a <base HREF=""> at
<http://beast.gtk.org/mirror/gnome-news/946276088.html>.  This is now
handled (in version 3.6.2.6 in CVS) as if the base tag didn't exist at
all, which is how browsers seem to handle it (checklink is/was already
pretty tolerant with bad markup).

But if there's nothing to be put into the base href, the tag really
shouldn't be there at all.
